Potemkin villages have nothing to do with USSR: these are supposedly fake villages inhabited by fake happy crowds on the shores of the Dniepr that were supposed to greet Empress Catherine II during her voyage to Crimea organized by her favorite Grigori Potemkin. Historical accuracy of this episode are highly debatable and likely to be defamation by Potemkin’s rivals to appear first in Prince de Ligne’s memoirs
